Caving, walking, trail biking, wildlife and spectacular scenery are all on the

doorstep.

Wedmore is an ancient village with many elegant old buildings, and the Base is close enough to be able to walk to it. It has a Village Store that sells newspapers, sweets, stationery, and a wide range of grocery items, including bread, dairy products and milk. There is also a butcher, a fish shop that also sells green groceries, and several craft shops and restaurants, as well as pubs. Modern stained glass, in the 12th- century St. Mary’s church, tells the tale of King Alfred; who in AD 878 made a peace treaty with the Danes at Wedmore, following their defeat at the Battle of Ethendune.

Somerset is excellent for outdoor scouting activities, so there are plenty of

adventures in the local area - here are some to explore:

1. Black Down - with World War II decoy 2. Burrington Combe - cave systems 3. Charterhouse - historic lead mining area 4. Cheddar Gorge - caves and high cliffs 5. Crook Peak - craggy outcrops with views 6. Dolebury Warren - with Iron Age hill fort 7. Ebbor Gorge - steep wooded gorge 8. Rowberrow Forest - modern plantation 9. Velvet Bottom Reserve - old lead mining 10. Westhay Moor Reserve - lots of wildlife 11. Wookey Hole - famous cave system
